Pan Shots

Pan shots are very hard but very beautiful. This post is about how to make decently looking pan shots!

The first thing to make sure that you do is choose the proper shutter speed. That is determined by how fast your subject is moving. Another good tip is to use flash and set the speed light for rear curtain style. Doing this makes the flash happen at the end of the exposure making a nice lighted pan shot. Pre-Focusing is also one way of making the subject easier to see by having the camera already focused on where your subject will be.

A big question is should you do the pan shot hand held or using a tripod? This is up to you. If you know what way and where the subject is going to move then you should most likely use a tripod. But if there is no set way the subject is suppose to move then using handheld can make it easier for the subject to be followed with a pan shot.

The most important tip of all is practice! Practicing doing pan shots will only make you more comfortable and better at them. If you want to become really good at pan shots then try and include a few in each video you make!
